Welcome to My Party!
The idea is for writers to answer a question in ONE sentence. They can then add a link to their current book (I start it off below to demonstrate). We'll continue with a new question each day until November 19th.
For attending the party, which celebrates the release on Nov. 16th of POISON, YOUR GRACE, the second of my Simon & Elizabeth mysteries, you can win in several ways.
1) All comments, whether author, reader, or some other form of life we don't understand, are entered in a daily drawing for a $10 Amazon gift certificate.
2) If you'd like to guess when my author copies will arrive at my home, give a date and time. (Again, release date is 11/16/11, and I haven't got them as of 11/12/11, so who knows?) Closest to the actual time I take delivery wins an autographed copy of the book.
3) Authors, I'm going to recognize the cleverest responses in a variety of categories: humor, uniqueness, creativity, and universality (that's the one that makes all the other authors say, "Oh, so true!" I'd like comments on which readers think are the best ones, but it's my blog, so I'm the final judge. ;)
So here's today's question:
What five things would your protagonist carry with him/her on a typical day, and where would those things be?
Simon carries an apothecary bag that, along with medicines like fox grease and toiletries like powdered rabbit head, often has elements of disguise like a wig, gobs of wax, and a cap to cover his hair.

Gertie wears a fishing vest, the pockets full of her investigation equipment - pepper spray, handcuffs, stun gun, water bottle, and whistle.

In the Captain Kangaroo pockets of Anastasia's crafting smock, she's been known to carry an X-acto knife (which came in handy during one harrowing Sunday afternoon), a pair of scissors, a can of spray adhesive, a wooden stuffing dowel, and a spare chocolate cherry muffin scavenged from the break room.

Katie Bonner rarely carries a purse, so it's up to the pockets of her jeans to carry important stuff like peppermints, her cell phone, drivers license, keys, and ... lots of lint.

I can't speak for my character (fictional) because I don't have one. Personally: driver's license, insurance papers (it's Michigan and the fine is hefty), checkbook, coffee shop rewards card, and car keys. If it's a work day, substitute my ID badge & Key (one item) for the coffee card. This sounds like great fun!
ReplyDeleteOlivia Limoges carries lipstick, a bottle of Shalimar perfume, lots of cash, a small notebook, and a flask of 25-year-old Chivas Regal Reserve. A girl's gotta be ready for anything!

Tony Abernathy carries all the tools of law enforcement--but Theo can't go anywhere these days with diapers, fabric scraps, hexagonal papers for English paper piecing, small (very sharp) scissors and dark chocolate.
ReplyDeleteI think your books will arrive on November 14, 2:00PM.
I think your author's copies will arrive on Nov. 15th.
ReplyDeleteMy character, the one in my head, carries a faux needlepoint canvas library bag that has at least three books in the middle section at all times. The side pocket hides her bulging (coupons and recipes, not much money) wallet, a plastic checkbook case, a Wayne State University Physician ballpoint pen (how did she get that?) key ring with a housekey, car key and five customer scan cards - one for Border Books. That's a collector's item now, so it will stay. There's lots of Kleenex, some used, some not, a wad of brown napkins from Taco Bell, a few extra mild sauce packets, also from Taco Bell and a repurposed prescription bottle half full of 200 mg. ibuprofen. Way at the bottom is a Gim Ling's carryout menu and oh, look, under that is where the birth control pills are!
The contents of Lt. Michael Stoddard's haversack vary depending on whether he's traveling, but on those days when he doesn't expect to travel much, the haversack might contain a few candle stubs, a wooden comb, a tinderbox, a horn spoon, and a snack such as dried venison or an apple.

Charlotte Bessette carries a purse, a cell phone -- a must because she's always needed to get in contact with Chief Urso -- a key ring holding keys to the Victorian house as well as The Cheese Shop and her car, a piece of hard cheese (usually a firm cheddar) just in case she gets hungry, and a Hershey's chocolate (her mother's favorite candy and a secret pleasure). Oh, and pictures of her family.

Carey doesn't carry much—some cash in her shorts' pocket, cell phone, travel-size bottle of sunscreen, an heirloom amethyst glass necklace and a sense of curiosity.
ReplyDeleteJillian Hart carries her smart phone with the cat cam app, $20, quilting pins, van keys and a lot of cat hair. A LOT. :-)

This is fun! Racecar driver Kate Reilly carries a purse or tote bag with a wallet, cell phone, chapstick, sunglasses, and earplugs (hey, she hangs out at a racetrack a lot of the time!).

Abby Knight is a young florist-in-training and the proud new owner of the cozy flower shop Bloomers. In her bag is a cell phone with camera to snap photos of flowers, floral arrangements, and sometimes suspicious characters. She wouldn't be without her business cards -- always trying to promote Bloomers -- lip gloss, a little shimmer powder to help conceal her freckles, a notepad and pen. Oops, that's six items, but Abby has always been a rule-breaker.
ReplyDeleteBeth Kennedy carries a hefty mom-sized purse which always includes band-aids, tissues, a comb for emergency tidying, and a snack or two. Plus, somewhere in the bottom, is her cell phone.
ReplyDeleteSadly, I don't think your books will arrive until the day after Thanksgiving.
Middle school science teacher Jo hauls around a bookbag full of partly graded lab reports, a heavy load of guilt for not having them ALL graded by now, the world's cheapest cell phone, hand cream to rub on the mirror in the girl's room so no one notices she's blurrier than everyone else, and chocolate in some form because she's probably just stumbled on a dead body or an undead one and it's hard to say which is worse.
ReplyDeleteEPPIE award winning UNDERDEAD and the sequel UNDERDEAD IN DENIAL can be found in print and ebook through my links here:

I think your books are going to come the Tues of Thanksgiving week at 1pm. Congratulations on your new release!!!
Some of us are cheating! ONE sentence! Do we need to get an editor in here?
ReplyDeleteHere's a comment from a reader who couldn't log in:
ReplyDeleteHi Peg,
I am enjoying your blog party!
Here are my predictions for your books' arrival: (1) November 15th. (2) November
16th, right on the dime.
My (developing) protagonist would likely carry the following five things with her:
lipstick & nailpolish, pen & tiny notebook, a center punch, a Swiss army knife
and her .38.
Brenda W.
Johnny dangerous is a thirty five year old who works for the department of public works in his home town, lives with mom and dad and throws up at the site of blood.
ReplyDeleteI'm not an author, but since I raise foster kittens for the local shelter, the pockets of my "home clothes" contain paper towels, eye salve, kleenex, anddog and cat treats.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to hope that your books will arrive a couple of days before the actual release date, so I'm guessing noon on 11/14/11.

ReplyDeleteMy latest character Hamlet--being of the feline purr-suasion--has no pockets and no need of them, being that his human, Darla, does all his fetching and carrying for him!
ReplyDeleteDOUBLE BOOKED FOR DEATH: A Black Cat Bookshop Mystery http://tinyurl.com/88hm2lz
Fun question! I enjoyed reading the comments--those where I knew the protags and those who were new to me!
ReplyDeleteI think maybe I shouldn't answer it myself until my book is out??
Your blog party is a wonderful idea!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's great that each answer gives some insite into the protagonist's personality - which is why, I'm sure, that you ask the question!
Anyway, it makes me want to read each book.
